The sport gymnastics has existed for over 2,000 years. In the early 1800's a German man named Friedrich Jahn, or also know as "The Father of Gymnastics" created the first modern gymnastics equipment and invented many of the exercises used today. Johann Friedrich GutsMuth, and Friedrich Ludwig Jahn designed the now familiar events, such as horizontal bar, parallel bars, side horse with pommels, balance beam, and vaulting horse. The ancient Greeks were the first people to do gymnastics. For them it was a form of physical exercise. It was also used by soldiers, to train to get ready for the war. The sport never really developed to like what it is now until the late 18th to early 19th century. In 1981 the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed, and five years later, gymnastics was first included in the Olympic Games. Later on, in 1928, women's competition was added.
